Best Time to Visit Venice: A Month-by-Month Guide

Discover the best time to visit Venice based on weather, crowds, prices, and events. Complete month-by-month breakdown for planning your trip.

Campo Santa Maria Formosa in Venice

Venice changes personality with every season. The city you visit in February during Carnival bears little resemblance to the sun-drenched August version overflowing with tourists. Choosing the right time can mean the difference between magical and miserable.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is widely considered the sweet spot for visiting Venice. Temperatures climb from 10 to 20 degrees, the city shakes off winter dampness, and flowers bloom in hidden gardens across the sestieri.

March still carries winter’s chill but brings fewer crowds and lower hotel prices. The occasional acqua alta (high water) can still occur, but flooding is rare after mid-March.

April is arguably the best single month. Days are long enough for sightseeing, temperatures hover around 15-18 degrees, and you can walk across Piazza San Marco without battling selfie sticks. Easter brings a short spike in visitors, but it passes quickly.

May edges toward peak season. Expect more people, higher prices, and occasional warm days reaching 25 degrees. The Venice Biennale opens in odd years, bringing art lovers from around the world.

Summer (June to August)

Summer means long days, hot weather, and maximum crowds.

June offers the best of summer before the real heat arrives. The Festa della Sensa celebrates Venice’s marriage to the sea, and evenings on the campo terraces are sublime. Hotel prices are climbing but haven’t peaked yet.

July brings the Festa del Redentore on the third weekend, with spectacular fireworks over the Giudecca Canal. Temperatures regularly exceed 30 degrees. Air conditioning in your hotel room becomes essential rather than optional.

August is peak tourist season. The city is packed, prices are at their highest, and the heat can be oppressive. Many local restaurants close as Venetians escape to the mountains. On the positive side, days are long and the light is extraordinary for photography.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn rivals spring as the ideal time, with added warmth from the lingering summer.

September combines pleasant temperatures (20-25 degrees) with thinning crowds as families return to school routines. The Venice Film Festival at the Lido brings a touch of glamour in early September. The Regata Storica on the first Sunday is one of Venice’s most photogenic events.

October offers golden light, comfortable temperatures, and genuine tranquillity. Prices drop noticeably. Acqua alta season begins, but serious flooding is uncommon until later in the month.

November is when Venice reveals its melancholic beauty. Fog rolls through the canals, creating an atmosphere that inspired Turner and Monet. The Festa della Salute on November 21 is a beloved local celebration. Expect rain and the possibility of significant acqua alta events.

Winter (December to February)

Winter Venice is an acquired taste, but those who acquire it rarely look back.

December brings Christmas markets, festive lighting, and remarkably few tourists. Hotel prices drop to their yearly lows. The cold is damp rather than bitter, hovering around 3-7 degrees.

January is Venice’s quietest month. You can have entire museums to yourself. Restaurants that stay open serve their best seasonal dishes to local regulars.

February transforms the city for Carnival. The two-week festival fills the city with masks, costumes, and celebration. Accommodation prices spike dramatically during Carnival week, so book months in advance.
